Practice the Power of Compassion for Greater Peace

When you expand your understanding of the power of compassion you will increase the love that is within you. There is an amazing feeling when you increase the love within you. Try this experiment. Take a person you know that you really don't like. Can you picture that person? What comes to mind? Do you have negative emotional feelings about that person? Do words like hate, selfishness, mistrust, arrogance, boastful, know it all, describe this person? Now think how you can show empathy towards that person. Use your heart when you do this. Have it come from the core of your being and understanding that we are all connected and we are all one. This will open the door of love within you a little wider than before. Something magical happens within you when you think these thoughts towards others.

In the book "How to Expand Love" content from His Holiness the Dalai Lama, translated and edited by Jeffery Hopkins Ph.D. it explains how to intensify this. Visualize that person in front of you and think: Like me, this person wants happiness and does not want suffering. Yet is stricken with such pain. May this person be free from suffering and the causes of suffering.

True compassion is an awareness that all sentient beings should be freed from suffering.

The Gift of the Blessing

When I was writing the blog called “Thoughts – Feelings – Emotions – Compassion, it was my intent to include “The Gift of the Blessing, but when I got to that part I had great difficulty in knowing how to write such a blog. As a result it was not included.

The difficulty comes with explaining and accepting and embracing the Gift of the Blessing. When I think back over all that I have learned, this may be the most difficult thing for me to personally accept and make a part of my life.

I will do my very best to try to explain the Gift of the Blessing and perhaps why it is so difficult to accept and embrace.

Let me present a situation with three possible reactions.

Assume I was with three other people and we had the television on and a news flash appears that shows a picture of the bodies of 1,000 people who have all been shot by their country’s army.

I then ask the first person how they reacted to what they saw, and he says, “Oh well, it must be their karma, let’s go get a pizza”.

I ask the second person for their reaction and find that they are very angry and feel that each of the soldiers should be killed.

As I go to ask the third person I see she has left the room so I follow her to the next room where I find her looking out the window with tears in her eyes. I ask her how she feels about what she saw. She says she just doesn’t understand why these things happen and feels so bad for each of those who were killed. She doesn’t feel that the soldiers should be killed and she also felt sorry for them for what they did.

In each case the person experienced a totally different reaction. And in each case it was clear that each person was at a different point, on their spiritual path.

I feel that the first person was so shocked by it all and could not deal with it, so he responded with, Let’s go get a pizza.

It was clear that the second person was still living in a world of duality since she reacted by feeling that one act deserved another act. The soldiers should all be killed.

The third person appears to be walking in two different worlds. She is clearly upset by what has happened, and doesn’t understand why these things have to happen, but does not react with the duality reaction of the second person.

These three reactions represent where I think most of us are at this time in our lives.

What I will attempt to do now is to demonstrate the next step that the third person must reach on her spiritual path.

I remember a few years back reading how a school house of Amish children were all shot and killed. I couldn’t believe that anyone could do such a thing. All I could think of was how I would feel if it happened to one of my children. At that point I think I was at the level of the second person and may have felt like if it were my child I would want to kill who killed my child.

Then a few days later I was shocked to read that the families of the children who were killed had forgiven the killer of their children. I was in dis-belief. How could they possibly forgive them?

Well my friends, I may now know how they were able to do that.

The Gift of the Blessing.

What I am about to say will be very difficult for you to accept. But I feel I must present this to you. And I will use myself in this attempt.

The difficulty I would have in forgiving someone who had killed my child is directly tied to the world of duality that I am living in.

It is also tied to believing that my reality is “real”.

Before I continue I need to acknowledge as few beliefs.

I believe that every soul on earth originated from Source (God)

I believe that every soul on earth has the God spark within them

I believe that every soul on earth lives forever

I believe that every soul on earth lives many lives

I believe that earth is a classroom so that every soul can learn lessons and expand their spirituality.

I believe that prior to incarnation, every soul agrees to play a role.

I believe that what we view as our physical reality is but an illusion.

Given all that and more………….let me continue.

You can accept or reject what I am about to say.

The 1000 souls that were killed allowed us to experience their deaths in the way that was appropriate at this time in our lives.

The soldiers did exactly the same thing.

The Five Tenants of Compassion

1. Do you acknowledge that a single creative source in our world of all there has ever been or will be?

2. Do you believe in Divine Guidance?

3. Do you believe every experience that happens is an opportunity to demonstrate your mastery of Life?

4. Do you believe that your life mirrors your quest to know yourself in all ways?

5. Do you truly believe that life essence is eternal and that your body is also eternal?

I believe that these events were opportunities to deal with the third and fourth Tenant.

So now you may ask….how do I apply the Gift of the Blessing?

1. When something happens that hurts you, you should view that those souls did what they did, so that you could experience that hurt.

2. You can not continue to respond to life events with the polarities of this world.

3. You must rise above the polarity of this world

By moving above the polarity of this world, you have taken a giant step forward in the preparation for ascension.

I just thought of another example, which is much easier for me to accept, and yet it is the same thing.

Assume a couple really want to have a child, and they try for years, and one day the women become pregnant. The baby is born and when the baby is 10 months old, dies from crib death. The couple is devastated.

It would appear as if the baby sacrificed its life on earth so that the couple could experience the devastation. The death of the baby presented an opportunity for the couple to spiritually grow in dealing with the devastation.

When you look at many events in your life…..were they not opportunities for you to experience Tenants 3 and 4.

Opportunities are always being presented to us. The question is do we view them as such.

I certainly have not reached this step at this point. However I am grateful that I have been exposed to this way of thinking about life. With this exposure my consciousness grows in a significant way as I am acknowledging a willingness to move my thinking beyond the limitations of this world of duality.

I am going to continue to work on being able to fully accept the Gift of the Blessing. If life is truly an illusion and I know that all souls live forever, and agreed to play a role in this lifetime, then it would seem that I should be able to reach a point of acceptance.

I hope that each of you will give these thoughts some serious consideration.
